Field-Based Modeling, Sensing and Control for Robotics, Automation and Mechatronics (RAM)

Abstract:Growing applications of robotics, automation and mechatronics in non-traditional industries and emerging applications (such as agricultural, food-processing, structural health monitoring, surgical robotics, healthcare, and intelligent manufacturing) present new opportunities as well as challenges. Often, such systems require fusing knowledge and techniques beyond traditional engineering fields. Field-based modeling plays an important role in designing novel actuators and sensors for robotics and automation. Recent advances in mathematical modeling, computational algorithms and mechatronics (that integrate computer, communication and control) have provided a basis to exploit new coupled computational-experimental models as a tool not only to optimize designs but also to derive embedded field-based information for real-time control.  This talk will discuss unique opportunities and challenges in response to global calls for developing new “intelligent” technologies to meet challenges of emerging RAM applications.  Along with some real-world examples, this talk will focus on real-time model-based sensing methods for reconstructing the physical fields for direct control, ultimately making the process a self-improved system. 

 



 Profile:Dr. Kok-Meng Lee (kokmeng.lee@me.gatech.edu), received the B.S. degree from the State University of New York, Buffalo, in 1980, and the S.M. and Ph.D. degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, in 1982 and 1985, respectively.
      
Currently, he is a Professor in the George W. Woodruff School of Mechanical Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta. He was also honored as Pao Yu-Kong Chair Professor at Zhejiang University. He is also Distinguished Professor with the State Key Laboratory of Digital Manufacturing Equipment and Technology at Huazhong University of Science and Technology under the National Recruitment Program of Global Experts. His research interests include system dynamics/control, robotics, automation, and mechatronics. He holds eight patents in machine vision, three degrees of freedom (DOF) spherical motor/encoder, and live-bird handling system.

Dr. Lee is a Fellow of the ASME and IEEE. He received the National Science Foundation (NSF) Presidential Young Investigator, Sigma Xi Junior Faculty Research, International Hall of Fame New Technology, Kayamori Best Automation Paper and IEEE/ASME Transactions on Mechratonics Best Paper awards.

        机械系统与振动国家重点实验室依托上海交通大学,其前身为振动、冲击、噪声国家重点实验室。在世行贷款“重点学科发展项目”的支持下,1988年底开始立项筹建,1995年9月建成,同年正式对外开放运行。目前,实验室拥有1.1万m2实验场地,固定人员62名,其中工程院院士3名,“千人计划”获得者6名,国家杰出青年科学基金获得者6名,973首席科学家5名,“百千万人才工程”国家级人选4名,长江特聘教授6名。由实验室固定人员组成的“复杂装备的数字化设计”团队于2008年入选国家自然科学基金委创新群体,并于2011年获得滚动。正高职称50名,副高职称11名。固定研究人员中90%以上具有博士学位,80%以上为45岁以下的中青年学者。更多>>
